Abstract :
In non-Persian non-Arabic works on Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī, two strange views have emerged: that al-Ṭūsī was a scholar from Azerbaijan and that he was committed to a Hellenistic attitude. My aim in this article is to examine these two views and expose their historical and analytical errors. In the past hundred years, neighboring countries have tried to register our country’s scientists under their own name. One of these efforts is considering al-Ṭūsī as Azerbaijani. With a historical and analytical approach, I will first show that al-Ṭūsī cannot be considered a scholar from Azerbaijan in any way; then, in explaining the theft of our Islamic Iran’s scholar Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī, I will mention some reasons, including that in this way they legitimize their government and strengthen its cultural pillar. On the other hand, Jamil Ragep, the very historian of science in the Islamic tradition, considering al-Ṭūsī’s extensive activities in mathematics and astronomy, aims to show that he sought to preserve the Greek heritage. I will show, using a historical and analytical approach, that it cannot be established that al-Ṭūsī was committed to a Hellenistic attitude without seeking to meet the practical needs of Islamic society or religious goals or something else. Such a reductive view of al-Ṭūsī obscures his complex, multidimensional personality.
